Research Interests:

My research utilizes climate models, as well as a wide range of observations, to improve our understanding of the climate system. This includes natural variability and the processes involved, as well as how climate is changing, what is driving that change, and how to adapt to and mitigate such changes. As such, my main research interests are climate variability, land-atmosphere interaction, atmospheric aerosols/short-lived pollutants, and large-scale climate dynamics.

Recent Projects:
Key results from recent research include:

1. Observational support of tropical tropospheric temperature amplification, consistent with theory and model-based predictions of future climate change.

2. The role of snow and soil moisture anomalies in forcing trends in, and multi- annual persistence of, the dominant mode of Northern Hemisphere atmospheric variability (the Arctic Oscillation or Northern Annular Mode).

3. The climate effects of satellite-derived anthropogenic aerosol forcing, which include: tropical expansion, a positive Arctic Oscillation-type response at high- latitudes, pronounced near-surface Arctic warming amplification associated with sea-ice loss, and land-sea temperature contrasts due to aerosol-cloud semi- direct effects.
